Personal Profile

I'm 49 years old and I've been illustrating professionaly for about 26 years now since 1992 and always working from the south of Portugal. Over the years I've worked in children books, a few board games, posters, prints, logos, my share of school book projects and everything that needed my style of illustration. Also do some illustration talks now and then when I'm invited to speak about my creative journey. 25 years ago, I was part of the team that created the first professional Portuguese PC video game ever done in Portugal, which came out back in 1995 (Gambys) after I spent three years designing the game characters; creating hundreds of sprite animations (pixel by pixel on the old Deluxe Paint software long before Photoshop came along) and also modeled and made a few 3D rendered short films to include in the game; at that time when 3DStudio was just beginning and was still in its 2.0DOS version; if you can imagine how that was like back then; with a 4.86PC at 33Mhz speed with 16MB Ram…fun times. After that I've designed hospitality software for several years while doing part-time illustration in between, but since 2005 I work full time in illustration as a freelancer. In (2018) I was nominated for the annual sci-fi illustration award by the European Science Fiction Society which was something that came as a surprise. Other than this, I read a lot, movies are also my inspiration and I take long walks as I love hiking always with a camera and something to sketch on in case I get inspired. Freelance Illustrator

25 years ago, I was part of the team that created the first professional Portuguese PC video game ever done in Portugal, which came out back in 1995 (Gambys) after I spent three years designing the game characters; creating hundreds of sprite animations (pixel by pixel on the old Deluxe Paint software long before Photoshop came along) and also modeled and made a few 3D rendered short films to include in the game; at that time when 3DStudio was just begining and was still in its 2.0DOS version; if you can imagine how that was like back then; with a 4.86PC at 33Mhz speed with 16MB Ram…fun times. After that I´ve designed hospitality software for several years while doing part-time illustration in between, but since 2005 I work full time in illustration as a freelancer. This year (2018) I was nominated for the anual sci-fi illustration award by the European Science Fiction Society which was something that came as a surprise. Over the years I mostly have worked on children books, board games , cover art and concept art with some commercial illustration for marketing campaigns. I do work regularly for a major publisher here in Pt (Areal) illustrating for school books and currently I´m doing a board game for Canada also. My specialty are fantasy environments and landscapes, I particularly love to create cover art, poster or artwork for puzzles for example. I do a lot of children book material although I rather create scenery than working on characters because I think my skills are best put to use when it comes to design environments and go into concept art type things. But I enjoy illustrating books a lot.
